Interplay MAM at Center of Radio Televisyen Malaysia Transformation

Three years ago, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) followed a national master plan to transform itself into a premier showcase provider of leading-edge digital television in Asia.  A government-owned public broadcaster and owner-operator of several radio and television stations, RTM used Avid Interplay MAM technology to rebuild its entire workflow configuration and implement a fully digital production environment and playout center for its Malaysian TV channels.

Housed at RTM’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, the center now provides full content access, production and distribution to station outlet via several key technological components, including:

-     Avid Interplay MAM for all media asset management and workflow orchestration functions
-     Amberfin iCR for content ingest
-     SGL FlashNet for deep archiving
-     Marquis Medway for transcoding and wrapping operations
-     Avid Media Composers for media editing and processing
-     Harmonic (Omneon) video servers
-     Rhozet Carbon Coder
-     Harris ADC100 and Invenio for station automation

Workflow Designed for Flexibility, Expandability

The workflow starts with ingest provided by Amberfin’s iCR system which also executes and manages quality control, detecting any defects on the tape such as black and still frames.  When discrepancies are identified, a report is generated and embedded within an Interplay metadata field.

Providing central control and administration for the facility itself, Interplay MAM manages both the Production Operations Center (POC) and the Technical Operations Center (TOC).  In this role, the system tracks and manages the material flow between the Avid editing suites, Omneon video servers, and the physical archive via SGL FlashNet.

Using MXF OP1A 30 Mb/sec as the high resolution format, and MPEG1 as the browse resolution format, thousands of media objects have been ingested into the Interplay archive since the project’s inception.  The Rhozet Carbon Coder transcoding engine currently handles the transcoding process between the POC and off-site production facilities working with ancillary formats.

For material that has to be transcoded via the media asset management system, the Interplay MAM technology interfaces seamlessly with, and controls the Rhozet system.  Integration of all these elements enables the Interplay MAM solution to serve as both the facility’s central integration layer and GUI for users accessing material and placing orders from the order management interface.

Interplay MAM provides an unprecedented level of capability for the RTM digital production and playout center.  As an end-to-end production solution, RTM now has a flexible and expandable foundation for managing assets over their lifecycle.  This has been the key element in the preparation, construction, and implementation of the master plan for network-wide management of digital assets.

Taking Advantage of New Business Opportunities

Ultimately, RTM’s objective is to better monetize its assets and take advantage of emerging business opportunities by leveraging content across a widening array of distribution platforms.  With the Interplay MAM system, content produced once can be quickly found, repurposed, and disseminated through a variety of channels.  This not only helps contain product costs, but increases the speed and agility of RTM’s response to new business opportunities.

Having greater access to content, including the ability to seamlessly retrieve and archive it, offers significant advantages for both the business and creative staff as they strive to generate the top-tier content necessary for the enterprise to grow and prosper.

Already, the Interplay MAM solution has not only enabled the company to enhance its established television stations RTM1 and RTM2 with the introduction of interactive services, but also to capture the leading edge of Malaysian programming with the launch of new interactive channels such as RTMi and Music Active.  With this technology, RTM has vaulted to the forefront of Malaysian TV development and is likely to stay there for a long time to come.
