Avid Packaging Policy

You may soon notice changes to the packaging used in our upcoming Avid product releases. As part of our ongoing efforts to become more environmentally friendly, and in line with our Avid Green Initiative, we will be significantly reducing the amount of printed documentation we provide with our packaged products. Here are the first steps we will be taking, with a goal of reducing our printed documentation 80% by the end of 2012.Take a look at our some of our objectives and progress against these goals.

Available Document Sources

Printed Documents:  While most documentation will now be available digitally, some printed documentation, such as Installation Guides, User Guides, and Quick Setup Guides, will continue to be included in the package.

Help Menu Access: With many Avid software titles, you can now conveniently access supporting documents through the application Help menu.

Electronic PDF Files: You’ll find PDF versions of some product documentation, such as User Guides and Reference Guides, in the associated documents folder on your software installation disc or on the application server (Interplay documentation is found on the Interplay Engine server).

Print on Demand: If you need printed documentation, you can order some documents through Print on Demand at Avid.com for a nominal fee, and we’ll promptly send you the requested documentation package. The document will only be printed when the order is processed, greatly reducing the volume of documentation pre-printed and held in inventory.

Environmental Impacts

  • Interplay: By providing documentation in only digital formats we expect to eliminate 200,000 printed pages associated with Interplay documentation annually. This savings equates to almost 1 metric ton of carbon each year.
  • Pro Tools: By providing PDF and Print on Demand versions of Pro Tools documents we’ll eliminate approximately 1,000 pages of printed documentation per Pro Tools systems shipped. This equate to a savings of over 8 metric tons of carbon each year.
  • MediaComposer/NewsCutter/Symphony: By replacing printed documentation for these products with digital versions, we’ll reduce our carbon output by 200 metric tons per year.
  • On-Air Graphics: Eliminating printed documents will remove over a quarter of a million printed pages annually – equating to 1.5 metric tons of carbon each year saved.

These changes will also lead to additional carbon savings through a reduction in product shipping weights and a direct reduction in paper consumption.
