Q-01:  What is the Media Composer Certified Professional exam?

A-01:  The Media Composer Certified Professional exam is designed to assess a candidate's advanced skills for editing with Avid Media Composer. The Professional certification goes beyond showing that you understand and demonstrate the fundamental concepts and workflow of editing and are able to use Avid Media Composer to edit a project through completion. With a Professional certification, you also demonstrate your ability to use advanced techniques and tools including Marquee title creation and animation, multi-camera editing, audio mixing, audio plug-ins, keys and mattes, and paint effects. The certification also demonstrates that you can achieve a higher level of efficiency by applying more advanced techniques and workflows.

The exam covers content from the MC 101 Editing Essentials course as well as the MC 205 Professional Effects and Compositing course and the MC 201 Professional Picture and Sound Editing course. Avid collaborated with a team of test development consultants and technology experts throughout the Media Composer Certified Professional Exam development process to ensure the exam is reliable, fair, and valid.

Q-03:  Who should take the Media Composer Certified Professional exam?

The Media Composer Certified Professional exam is designed for individuals who possess:

  • A thorough knowledge of the editing process through experience as an editor, assistant editor, director, producer, student, or other experience that has provided knowledge of the editing process for digital media
  • Familiarity with Macintosh and/ or Windows operating systems and software applications on those platforms, including familiarity with their user interfaces and navigational tools
  • An understanding of and the capability to use Avid Media Composer to edit a project through completion, with all of the operational skills to capture and manage media, edit, design effects, and output the finished program.

In comparison to the Media Composer Certified User, Media Composer Certified Professional candidates should use more advanced techniques and tools including:

  • Marquee title creation and animation
  • Multi-camera editing
  • Audio mixing
  • Audio plug-ins
  • Keys and mattes
  • Paint effects

Finally, candidates are expected to ensure compliance with broadcast standards and legal requirements.

Q-07:  What happens if I take the exam and do not pass?

A-07:  The formal exam policy is posted on Avid.com.  Unless a candidate is banned from retaking the exams for reasons of fraud or rules violations, the following retake policy applies:

  • If a candidate does not pass an exam the first time, he/she may retake it after at least 24 hours have passed.
  • If a candidate does not achieve a passing score the second time, the candidate must wait at least two weeks to retake the exam a third time.
  • A two-week waiting period will be imposed for all subsequent exam retakes.
  • A candidate may not take a given exam any more than five times per calendar year.
  • Once a candidate has passed an exam, it may not be taken again.

 

Exam results are shown immediately when an exam is completed and submitted for evaluation. If a passing grade is not secured at the time of test completion, a summary of content areas is shown for recommended review prior to an exam retake.

 

Q-10:  What should I bring with me to take the exam?

A-10:  You must bring two forms of personal identification with you to the exam testing center. Both forms of ID must have your signature, and one of the two forms of ID must have your photo. Valid forms of identification include: driver's license, passport, or equivalent.

 

Reference materials, laptops, backpacks, notepads, pens, or other personal equipment are not allowed in the testing area.

The Media Composer Certified Professional exam is delivered exclusively by Avid's worldwide network of Avid Learning Partners (ALPs). Visit the exam registration page on the Avid website to find complete instructions to register for the Media Composer Certified Professional exam.

The Media Composer Certified Professional exam is comprised of 60 questions and the time allotted to complete the exam is 90 minutes. All candidates must first successfully pass the Avid Media Composer Certified User Exam prior to taking the Professional exam. 

Test items are presented in the following formats:

  • Multiple Choice: Select the single option that best answers the question
  • Multiple Response: Select multiple options that best answer the question. The number of answers required is always named at the end of the question (e.g. Choose three.)
  • Illustration Review: Refer to the illustration (e.g. Media Composer user interface, movie frame, etc.) prior to answering the multiple choice or multiple response question 

The Media Composer Certified Professional exam is taken either:

  • After completing the four core Media Composer courses (MC-101, MC-110, MC-205, and MC-201) instructor-led courses, or
  • By registering for the exam at Avid.com or through an Avid Learning Partner

With the exception of an erasable tablet, no other materials or aids are available during the exam.
