Oblique split screen?

    Hi.
Is it possible to make an oblique split screen effect in xpress studio 5? Means something like that:

   1    /
     /
/     2

Where 1 is one clip and 2 is second clip. I know l-conceal effect but it's not oblique, just sides to sides. I hardly think it's possible to make this kind of effect in xpress, but client wants it and I have to be sure.
    Thanks in advance.
    Tom

    Re: Oblique split screen?

If you composed both your shots for an upper left/lower right split screen, then this is easy: clip 1 on V1, clip2 on V2 then apply a diagonal edge wipe to V2.  Done.

If you didn't compose for this effect, apply a 3D PIP to both clips, and adjust scale, position and rotation (if necessary) to taste, then apply diagonal edge wipe to V2 by alt-click-dragging it there from EP.

Anything fancier than that and you're looking at spending some quality time with Boris FX, After Effects, or Combustion.  :)

    Re: Oblique split screen?

For this sort of thing you can make any shape you want. Simply make the shape you want as a matte in Photoshop, import and apply the Matte Key effect.

White is opaque, black is transparent. So, make a frame that is split diagonally with white in one half balck in the other. When importing into Avid, be sure to use 601 levels, so that you get a full key.

To apply them, I tend to put the white matte image on the video layer above the video I want it to apply to, then drop them Matte Key effect to it, double click on the Matte Key effect on the timeline (in segment mode) to open the nest, and drag my vision up into the second nested video layer of the Matte Key.   I'm pretty sure there is a more efficent way, but I am not at an Avid at the moment, so I can't recall.

In the same way, you can make any shape wipe you want as well, just create an animated matte layer.

yes great tip, but in case you don't have photoshop or don't have time to open it, then build someting, export it and then import it, you can also draw pretty decent mattes in the Marquee title tool. just open it, draw your shapes with the pen tool. just make sure and make certain parts white and certain parts black. save the title to a bin, place it in the sequence and then "alt" drop the matte effect on it.  The beauty of this is that if you "alt" drop the matte effect on it, the title will re-create later at a higher-rez if you need it to.

I haven't tried with Marquee, but I believe it will be the same as Title Tool, the white will never be pure white, but a slightly clipped white (235 vs 255) and will not create an entirely opaque key, similar black will be at 16 not 0, and not be totally transparent.

If you don't have Photoshop and a willing to learn a little, I could suggest trying The GIMP.
