Did you consolidate the sequence and create a new sequence at the same time? If so, then your color corrected timeline contains new master clips, which are only parts of the original media. That's why relinking doesn't work in this case, I think.
To make this thing work you should have consolidated the original master clips and use a copy of the timeline to make the cc. That sequence would find it's original media even without relinking.

That's why your sequence is made of new master clips now, and not the original ones. In Avid DS your method would work because it identifies media by the tape name and the timecode, and also you can have a master clip which is partially online only. But I don't think XP will let you do this. It would have to relink the new master clips to older media files as if the master clips were subclips only, but they are not.
