I have done the vob files and then used dvd2avi but avid won't recognise the avi file? Do you have any ideas please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DVD2AVI is a good way, chances are you took the wrong codec for AVI.. What did you use?

    Menno

ps running a DVD settop player through a transcoder (deck or Mojo) into Avid is also a fast way to capture DVD footage. Unless it is protected content.

If Avid doesn't recognize the AVI codec, then make it! Pull that AVI into After Effects and convert it using the Avid Meridien Compressed/Uncompressed Option. Good option if you can set it up for overnight... but I agree. It shouldn't be THAT hard... but then again... you are ripping off of a dvd... that's alot of encoding/decoding/copy protection going on.....

Thanks for the link (I did a search btw but did not find that at all). I have 4.6 not 5, so does Avid After Effects and meridien apply to me?
I will also try putting my DVD player into the deck and capturing it that way.

Look at the threads, there is info on how to rip a DVD with DVD2AVI, the avi can be imported into Avid. Version is not a real issue here. Just read, search for DVD2AVI and try. Easyest and fastest option is to connect a DVD player to the analoge input of a deck or mojo or transcoder and capture that way.

    Have fun

Re: How do I import dvd into Avid?

I usually played back in a dvd player and recorded it in avid.
Last time I used snapz pro, actually a screencapture utility.
But now, if your mac is fast enough, you can use it also to capture video. and it is an exact copy of what you play back.

Surprise [:O] Re: how do I import dvd vision into Avid pro 5

In the Old forum threads there appears interisting method of importing into Avid using frameserver VFAPI. For example here :

    Land
     posted July 15, 2004 01:49 PM

The process as described is actually more complicated than it needs to be. Doing it is fairly simple and a lot easier than explaining the process. You can rip the video you need from a DVD to one large file, not multiple files, and then use DVD2AVI to open it and save it as a project file. Run the VFAPI converter on the saved project file and it will create the avi reference file. Even if you spend 20 minutes ripping a two hour video to your hard drive, the DVD2AVI process takes 2-3 minutes. The VFAPI conversion takes 5 seconds. There's no conversion losses and it's at least four times faster than copying it through an analog connection. .....

But there are also unanswered "complaints" that it results into white screen only video.

And thats my case - the "fake"avi  plays well by windows player, but after "importing" it into Avid it plays as a white screen only :((
    (DVD2AVI v 1.77.3, VFAPIv. 1.05, Avid Xpress Pro v. 4.6)

Does somebody really tried succesfully the described method ?! Or was it theory only published without experience ?

Re: Frameserver import into Avid ?? bump

I'm having the same white screen problem when importing the avi file... I even resorted to filming off the tv screen, but that didn't look that great once I'd sobered up.  Now gone back to Dvd2Avi and am gonna try importing with each different codec...

Re: How do I import dvd into Avid?

I finally got the image into Avid using Dvd2Avi with the following settings...

    Speed: Normal   Codec: Cinepak Codec

    Screen: Full   Pieces: N/A

    Width: 720  Height: 480

It took ages with the Cinepak Codec for the 4 minute music video that I was converting, but the quality is real nice.  Only problem is... I'm not getting any sound. Not really a problem for me as I don't need it but you could always rip the sound off the dvd using a nice program like DVD audio extractor...
