This past weekend was my first time working with HDV, here's how it went.
I used the Sony HRV-Z1 to shoot a benifit concert at a cabaret. It was for a "freebie" mainly cause I wanted to try out the camera on something other than a paying gig. We shot handheld and used a shotgun mic into the XLR input.
This is a sweet camera! The LCD looks amazing! I shot in both 1080i and 1080i with the 30p Cineframe mode. Initial testing showed the 24p cineframe mode to be much to choppy to use. Shooting was easy, I didn't gain up at all and the iris was open most of the way.
When it came to post, I started a new HDV 1080i project. Avid saw the camera no problem and I had control. When I captured the first tape it would stop everytime the camera had been turned off during the shoot, same as using a deck where the same thing would happen. When I captured the second tape I was getting audio underruns every 5 minutes. I re-started the program and the problem went away.
Injesting the 30p cineframe material kept the look it had in camera, it came in the way it should.
I just did some straight cuts to make a few quick sequences. I wanted to put them on my website so I exported an HDV file (I choose "better" quality") since QT Reference doesn't work with HDV. It took about 5Xrealtime to export the movies on a 2.8Ghz processor. I changed the extension from m2t to mpg and took it into Sorenson to make a WMV file. I choose the WMV medium preset and chaned the size to 480x240. You can take a look at the resulting clips here.

I haven't tried making a HD DVD yet, which I will do soon using WMV9. If there's any other experiments people would like me to try let me know.
I exported a full-rez HDV 30 second clip that you can download if you want to play with it. It's over 100MB. It has been renamed with the mpg extension, it was originally m2t.

Yes, it does require quicktime 7 to view. Again, the web address is:

Thanks very much!
I rented the same camera a few weeks ago. I shot a test roll of HDV but shot my project in DVCam. I liked a lot of things about the camera - as compared to my PD-150 it is easier to focus, the viewfinder is awesome, the image on the LCD screen is ipressively visible in bright sunlight, and the slow zoom speed actually is slow... you can creep in, unlike the 150. The aperture is also incremented in smaller divisons so you can make more minute adjustments. There were a few more things I like but I can't think of them now.
The biggest drawback (pretty big) is the performance in low light. I was amazed that I had to go to high gain (+3 or +6) in some LIT interview situations. Not available light - I was using a Chimera with 650 watts inside it. On all other counts I was ready to buy this camera but that was enough to make me pause.

Considering that Avid won't run properly with QT7 I don't think there's many people that will be able to watch it that frequent these forum
