Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

I've started encoding for the web some media that I have exported from Avid. I'm encoding to 2mbps, 1mbps and 512kbps streaming quictime video. Every time I try to do this from media that I have exported from Express Pro 5.5.2, Sorenson Squeeze crashes! I've tried different settings, including enabling and disabling Avid DV Codec, exporting Quicktime movie and also using ths Sorenson Squeeze setting which creates a Quicktime Reference. Sorenson Squeeze crashes in the middle of encoding. I have successfuly encoded other quicktimes that were exported from an older version of Express Pro on a PC. On my MAC I'm running OS 10.4.7 with Express Pro version 5.5.2 and Sorenson Squeeze doesn't like any of my exports. I'm using Sorenson Squeeze version 4.3.303.17.

Is there a solution to my problem?

Here is what one of the errors said when the "application Squeeze quit unexpectedly" :

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

I tried using Apple Compressor and that also quits unexpectedly!! So I assume the problem is not Sorenson Squeeze or Compressor, but the exported media from Avid Express Pro 5.5.2.

Here's the error message I got from Compressor:

and then this error message came up right after that last one:

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

Now I'm getting a different error. A smaller dialog box is giving me this error at 99% completion!!!! How frustrating!

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

... it has to be the way I'm exporting video from Avid. I just threw in a quicktime video that was not exported from Avid and Sorenson Squeeze completed the encoding using the same preset without crashing.

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

    hi,
Since the 5.5.1 xpress update, I'm unable to import QT reference from xpress with the "avid dv codec" enabled, sorenson 4.3.3 quits on the import process.
It works without the "avid dv codec" enabled, the encoding for dvd completes without any problem here, but then as you may know the output mpeg file from sorenson is very dark. That's why we need sorenson to accept QT reference with "avid dv codec" enabled just as it was working with xpress 4.8.4.
I've updated to 5.5.2, still the same issue...
You say you're able to import QT reference with "avid dv codec" enabled and sorenson only quits in the encoding process, looks like you're luckyer than me, as I said sorenson quits as soon as I try to import those QT reference !

Is it too much to ask that the workflow between two softs sold together be tested on any major update. Hope a fix is coming...

I'll keep trying for a solution and keep you posted...

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

This is an identified bug in the new software. There are two workarounds:

1: Don't use the Avid codecs

    2. Add black to the end of your sequence but do not export the last frame of the sequence. In other words, add 30 frame of black but make your mark out for export 10 frames after the end of the sequence.

This should be fixed in the next CPR release.

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

Thanks for the tip and info, BLKDOG!

I found another workaround. Instead of adding black to the tail of my sequence or taking off Avid DV Codec, I made one change to my pre-set in Sorenson Squeeze. I'm making quicktime movies to be shown on the web, so under Stream Time at the top of the pre-set options, I kept it Hinted. However the change I made was lower down on the right column of the config window. I turned off the Streaming options that specified "slice picture into packets of..." and "force block refresh every.." I went through a lot of trial and error both in Avid and Sorenson Squeeze and this was the one variable that seemed to make it work for me. I look forward to the next CPR release!!

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

So you're actually able to import a QT reference with "avid codec" to sorenson?
Sorenson here quits "as soon as" I import a QT reference with "avid codec".
I don't get what I'm doing wrong, I apply the same setting options on the xpress pro export then the ones that worked with 4.8.4.
I tried BLKDOG's workaround, no success.
Can you describe to me the settings you use for the QT reference export on xpress?

Which workaround didn't work for you? Not using hte Avid codec or not using the end of the sequence? Both work here with sorenson. It's possible you may have something else happening here.

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

    thanks for the quick reply,
Not using the end of the sequence didn't work for me. Not using Avid codec let's me import and encode with sorenson, only problem is that the result is a very dark mpeg output file. That's why I've always used avid codec for sorenson in the past and it did work great before 5.5.

    Thanks again for helping

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

That's true for the QT Reference but if you export using the Animation codec, you can get a perfect colorspace and it won't crash Sorenson.

It's a temporary fix. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

Thanks for the workaround, this is working fine for me. I tried it on a very short sequence, the compression looks good. This will do until the "avid codec & QT reference" problem is solved for sorenson. Next CPR maybe???
Anyways thanks a lot, beside exporting time and hard drive space it is a good temporary fix.

We're hoping fo the next release...yes.

Can you tell me, when you export using the QT ref, do you have "Use Marks" selected inthe OPTIONS dialogue box?

Re: Sorenson Squeeze crashes every time I encode for the web

    I've tried both.
In order to try your workaround (black tail and no use of the end) I had "use marks" selected of course. I've actually tried all the different options, as long as "avid codec" is enabled, the QT ref crashes sorenson on import.
