Avid iNEWS newsroom computer system lets journalists read wires, write scripts, and manage the entire newscast's timing and status without leaving the desktop.

The Data Receiver allows the NRCS to collect information from diverse sources, including serial wire feeds, telnet, email, and network shares--even a journalist's PDA at a faraway courthouse. And with the iNEWS Web Client, reporters can log in from remote breaking news sites and write their stories as if they were sitting at their desktop in the station.

NewsCutter nonlinear editing systems include the NRCS tool to link directly with iNEWS or other newsroom computer systems and edit stories directly to the words in the script, and the iNEWS Instinct journalist editing tool provides a script-based video editing interface into iNEWS.

The iNEWS Command automation-assist system tracks the rundown's progress throughout the production process and triggers Avid play to air servers and on-air graphics systems.

Wires and rundowns that are stored and managed in the iNEWS NRCS are available to journalists using iNEWS Instinct in the familiar text-based interface.

The groundbreaking storyline tool turns the traditional nonlinear editing timeline on its side, providing journalists with simple story editing tools and enabling them to search, sort, manage, and edit with news footage in an intuitive, intelligent interface.

iNEWS Instinct lets users create VOs and VOSOTs, completing stories that often make up 80 to 90 percent of a newscast right at their desktop. Or they can rough-cut the story together and save the sequence for a NewsCutter editor to complete with transitions, graphics, titles, and finish-quality production effects.

Both systems can send the finished story directly to playout.

The Avid iNEWS NRCS is the heart of the newsroom for everyone in the station, and for reporters out in the field.

With the iNEWS Web Client browser-based interface, reporters logged into the station's NRCS from remote breaking news sites can tell their stories as if they were sitting at their own desktop in the station.

Reporters without a Web browser can still transmit story data directly to the server. The iNEWS Data Receiver collects information from anywhere via serial wire feeds, telnet, watch folders, and network shares--and from a journalist's PDA at a faraway breaking story.

Whether with the Web Client interface or feeds ingested into the Data Receiver, all information is made available by the iNEWS NRCS to all connected users, in and out of the station.

The station's "on-air look" is created by the graphic designers, but it's the journalists who have to use it for lower-thirds, graphics, and other story-telling tools. And once it's all created, how does everything get on air at the right time-and with the right look?

Graphic artists create the graphic and text templates for news elements using PostDeko software, including logos and station IDs, lower-third captions and other superimposed graphics, and full-screen backgrounds with text.

iNEWS journalists simply fill in the templates in the DekoSelect plug in with the correct caption, quote, or other text - and then insert them directly into their stories, either manually using a macro to create them or using the iNEWS Title Entry Tool.

If journalists wish to include clips and stills in the script, they may do so by entering the ID of the graphic in the story as a production cue. Files created and stored by the graphics department using ThunderBrowse will then accurately appear within the story.

At air time, an Avid iNEWS Command operator triggers the graphics playlist, which is kept in sync with the iNEWS rundown.

Users can build recording schedules in advance or instantly record on-the-spot feeds for incoming breaking news, making everything available to all connected users as material is automatically checked in by the Avid Interplay nonlinear workflow engine.

With the Interplay Assist production tool, desktop users can view and log incoming feeds (or already stored footage) and add annotations, locators and searchable custom metadata in real time.

Locators added on the fly during logging appear frame-accurately when the clip is brought into the editor.

It's where the technical director switches the newscast and calls the camera shots, clip playback, and on-air graphics. Web producers can create online page templates in Avid Active ContentManager based on the station's existing branding and page design, so that stories can be dynamically generated, published to the Web, updated and archived for a completely expanded audience experience.

Using iNEWS NRCS at the desktop, journalists can automatically send an entire iNEWS story to an Active ContentManager template and publish it directly to the Web.

For online stories with rich media--video sequences, images, audio and headframes--with the NewsCutter system's NRCS tool in an editing suite, an editor or producer can create a video sequence along with automatic information about the story, such as slug name, tape ID, and even duration, and add it to the online version along with the iNEWS story.

An online version of the video is created, encoded in streaming format by Avid Interplay ProEncode.

All assets are published using automated rules from Avid Active ContentManager quickly, simply and accurately--making news available to online audiences at the same time it's being prepared for broadcast.
