Welcome to the ACU Program Overview!
Start here to embark on an intensive learning process
with the goal of obtaining Avid Certified User (ACU) status!

The Program
Knowledge is power and "power users" of Avid editing software know how to best utilize the many strengths of their systems. The Avid Certified User (ACU) program establishes a professional standard for Avid editing system proficiency in the post-production industry. Certification is achieved by mastering a comprehensive set of skills on the Avid editing system and passing a rigorous multiple-choice exam. Two certification paths are available:

  • ACU - Xpress Pro
  • ACU - Media Composer

Both certifications cover the following topics: editing, basic effects, input and output, creating titles in Avid Marquee, and color correcting shots and sequences. The core training of the ACU program is provided by completing a set of courses available through:

ATTENTION EDUCATORS! In addition to the ACU Certification, be sure to read below on how to adopt the ACU program into your curriculum.

Certification Process
For successful completion of the ACU program and achievement of ACU status, we recommend the following steps:

1. Decide which ACU path you would like to pursue and gather all necessary information:

2. Complete all required courses to gain the skills needed to earn ACU status through ALEX or an AAEC.

ALEX Online Courses - Purchase the ALEX subscription through the Avid Webstore:

AAEC Classroom Courses - Find a local Avid Authorized Education Center (AAEC) and being enrolling in any of the required courses:

MC101 Editing with Avid Media Composer
MC 110 Introduction to Avid Media Composer Effects
PE239 Introduction to Color Correction with Avid Media Composer and Avid Xpress

3. Practice what you learn on an Avid editing system. We do not recommend that you take the ACU Certification Exam immediately after completing coursework.

4. Pass the ACU Certification Exam for your chosen path, Media Composer or Xpress Pro. The online exam can be purchased through the Avid webstore (ACU - Media Composer Certification Exam or ACU - Xpress Pro Certification Exam) and is administered through the ALEX online environment. You can also take the exam at select Avid Authorized Education Centers. After you complete exam in the ALEX environment, you will be prompted to email Avid Training Services to verify your results. You will be contacted with further instructions on how to receive your official ACU certificate and logo (or your complimentary second attempt exam).
