With Pro Tools Sketch, Avid addresses the growing needs of modern creators, no matter their preferred music creation style. While the Pro Tools Sketch iPad app is available for free to anyone via the Apple App Store, the Pro Tools 2023.9 update is now available to all Pro Tools customers on an active subscription or perpetual license with a current Software Updates + Support Plan, as well as all users of the free Pro Tools Intro application.

Pro Tools Sketch

Pro Tools Sketch is a significant expansion of the Pro Tools music creation workflow, adding a non-linear creation environment to the proven Pro Tools toolset used on the majority of top music releases, movies and TV shows. Users can now start with clip-based sketches in which loops, MIDI and recordings can be freely organized and played, and then exported to be shared with friends. Sketches can also be moved to the Pro Tools timeline for further production using its world-class editing and mixing tools. And since sketches can be moved between computer and iPad at will, users can capture and play with ideas anywhere inspiration strikes.

Pro Tools Sketch features 16 tracks and virtually unlimited scenes and includes over 1 GB of loops and a variety of onboard effects to create for any kind of music genre. Users can quickly audition audio and MIDI loops in the browser and drag them into the launcher where they can be played, moved and tweaked. Audio and MIDI can be recorded and edited alongside loops and then quickly organized into linear song arrangements. Whether users are experienced or new to Pro Tools, Sketch gives them new ways to experiment and make something they truly love.

The release also delivers drag-and-drop plugin slot reordering to give users greater flexibility in experimenting with and changing processing order, and more.

The Pro Tools Sketch iPad app is now available free to download via the Apple App Store. The Pro Tools 2023.9 software release is now available to all Pro Tools customers on an active subscription or perpetual license with a current Software Updates + Support Plan, as well as all users of the free Pro Tools Intro application.

ITV News is the largest commercial news broadcaster in the UK, producing national and regional news bulletins on terrestrial TV and online through ITVX, for both live streaming and catch-up.

ITV News is the brand name used by ITV for its daily news programmes. ITV produces its content for Nations and Regions, with ITN (part-owned by ITV) producing its National Network service. ITN also produces news programming for Channel 4 and Channel 5 in the UK.

While enabling story and rundown-based outputs, the project will offer a single consistent interface to key news production roles, and allow teams to freely create, collaborate and exchange planning data, stories, rundowns and content across all ITV regions and ITN. The new system ensures reliability, which is paramount to ITV’s operation, and gives ITV’s editors, producers, journalists, assistants and other workflow contributors continuous access to the latest Avid functionality from wherever they choose to work. 

ITV will benefit from Avid’s full suite of newsroom solutions on a subscription basis. These include Avid NEXIS® F-Series storage, MediaCentral™ | Production Management,  MediaCentral™ | Newsroom Management (iNEWS®) and FastServe® | I/O to deliver media ingest and playout. 

Video editing is available through Avid Media Composer® hosted in ITV’s datacentre, allowing newsroom editors to connect and work remotely.

Offering full functionality via a web interface, the system will also make it easier for production teams to share news content for broadcast. Avid has integrated solutions from its alliance partners Woody and Traco for ingest and graphics too.

To help audio engineers more easily and consistently deliver clean and clear production audio, Avid will preview new development efforts to utilize Celemony ARA 2 technology to integrate iZotope’s RX Spectral Editor directly into Pro Tools. This will enable users to have a more fluid workflow to repair and clean-up audio, without the need to hop in-and-out of applications. The professional standard for dialogue editing and other critical processes, RX Spectral Editor visually displays unwanted audio imperfections and interference for easy restoration and clean-up.

MTRX II further pushes the limits of high-end audio environments by expanding on its predecessor’s reputation, now including 256 channels of Dante™ and SPQ filters for room correction across a full 64-channel Theatrical Dolby Atmos monitor environment. Incorporating a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) model, the latest release auto-completes chord symbols above the stave as users click through bars and notes of their score. By analyzing the surrounding music for harmonic context, Sibelius can add suggested chord symbols to music of all textures—from full polyphonic sections to simple one-line melodies—speeding up chord notation workflows.

“Until now, entering chord symbols and chord diagrams into Sibelius—even assisted by a plugin—has been a manual process,” explains Sam Butler, Director of Product Management, Avid. “Our new AI-driven feature makes it quick and easy to add chord symbols to existing music, while giving the user complete flexibility to manage the process. It’s like having an interactive session with a harmony professor at your fingertips.”

Users can ask Sibelius to input chord symbols either at the start of each bar or after each note. If the harmony is ambiguous, or if users disagree with a suggested chord symbol, Sibelius can instantaneously present other plausible chord suggestions with a simple click.

Where Sibelius detects multiple chord symbol possibilities, it indicates the number of suggestions and displays a “confidence score” for each. Users can simply scroll through the plausible possibilities before making their choice.

The local AI model driving the chord symbol suggestion has been specially trained from several public datasets, using music by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, with smaller sets by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Max Reger.

Transaction Details

The transaction was unanimously approved by Avid’s Board of Directors and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2023, subject to Avid stockholder approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The transaction will be financed through a combination of equity and debt financing and is not subject to a financing condition. Upon completion of the transaction, Avid will become a privately-held company, and its common stock will no longer be traded on Nasdaq.

Pro Tools 2023.6 introduces track markers that enable music and audio post users to install points on a track, performance notes, dialogue and lyric references and edit comments. Customers can use markers to give detailed, color-coded comments within a track to speed navigation and improve arrangement, mixing, and collaboration workflows. Track markers also offer improved interoperability and compatibility with Media Composer when exporting Pro Tools sessions. 

Pro Tools now also features new track widths up to 9.1.6 to support Dolby Atmos and other immersive formats including MPEG-H. These new track widths expand the formats that can be mixed and monitored, but they also enable more advanced 3D plugin processing. Users can now also import and export higher quality Dolby Atmos mixes with 96 kHz ADM file support. New track widths offer increased resolution for better spatial accuracy for modern gaming engines and VR workflows with support for up to 7th order Ambisonics. 

This release continues to improve upon Pro Tools user experience with several new updates. Selecting and configuring the audio hardware is the most fundamental step in setting up a system and Pro Tools now streamlines the process with a guided setup if no device is configured, helping users get up and running faster. The Event Operations window has also been redesigned to enable the adjustment of various MIDI properties like timing, velocity, and transposition. The award-winning Pro Tools | Carbon audio interface also sees an update in this Pro Tools release with the addition of surround support. Now supporting configurations from 5.1 to 7.1.2, the HDX DSP-accelerated system becomes even more capable of handling the most demanding audio workflows.

Fundamental to Sony’s C3 Portal news workflow is the automatic preservation and enrichment of metadata from the point of origination. C3 Portal supports pushing metadata to the camera before shooting commences; for example, iNEWS® slug information and assignment data, preserving this metadata throughout the production process when the story checks into Avid MediaCentral. Future workflows will allow rights information – and therefore genealogy – to be automatically maintained from creation throughout the edit and into archive.

A powerful component of the new solution is the ability to send proxy video quickly back to the news production center via 5G network and Sony’s C3 Portal. The Marquis integration enables the ‘edit while record’ feature in Media Composer® so stories can be edited as soon as the proxy file starts ingesting. With a wide choice of Sony proxy resolutions, news organizations may easily take the proxy to air within seconds for fast news turnaround.

This novel workflow automates extraction of sequence information from the Avid low-res proxy edit. With this sequence data, Marquis will automatically retrieve the high-resolution media from either Sony’s C3 Portal, and [scheduled for 2023] also the originating camera or originating camera cards. Assuming a 10:1 shooting ratio, this partial extraction process results in a 90% reduction in 5G data transferred and network bandwidth required. Using the dynamic relink feature in Avid, the high-res content simply drops into the timeline and automatically substitutes the low-res content, thus transforming news production.

David Toomey joins Avid following six years with creative software tools and digital experiences provider Adobe Inc., most recently serving as Senior Practice Director for Media & Entertainment and Telco markets. On the opening day at IBC2022, Avid will unveil a technology preview aimed at dramatically enhancing creative collaboration and workflow efficiency between video editors and audio post professionals working on shared projects.

Making their IBC Show debut are the new Avid | NEXIS VFS and new NEXIS F-series shared media storage solutions. Avid | NEXIS VFS allows customers to deploy proven NEXIS workflows on premises or in the cloud, evolving their operations over time—all with a flexible subscription business model. NEXIS F-series represents a major evolutionary advancement for Avid’s industry-leading on-premises shared storage solution, delivering significantly higher performance and scalability.

Additionally, Avid will preview its next generation all-flash drive NEXIS | F2 SSD storage engine, slated for release later in 2022. Designed for media’s most demanding workflows, such as finishing, VFX and grading of HDR, 4K and 8K content, the NEXIS | F2 SSD engine delivers significantly higher scalability, higher performance, and higher capacity than the NEXIS | E2 SSD solution it replaces. All NEXIS F-Series hardware, including NEXIS | F2 SSD, is compatible with all current Avid NEXIS systems.

 Editors need to access massive sets of media files that have traditionally been stored in the same location as the editing team. In collaboration with Avid, Amazon Studios will untether their editorial process to allow creative work to happen from almost anywhere, and centralize the editorial and content workflows in the cloud. This collaboration will bring Avid’s Emmy-winning Media Composer software tool and Avid NEXIS media storage solutions to editors and other content contributors wherever they are, supporting creative teams that are spread across the globe.

This collaboration is an important step forward for Amazon Studios’ vision of a globally scalable studio-in-the-cloud platform, which will eventually include Avid’s MediaCentral production platform.

By leveraging AWS and its global infrastructure, Amazon Studios will further centralize production assets in the cloud, creating a smoother, more unified production workflow. Production and Post-Production teams will spend less time duplicating and transferring media to critical team members, allowing more time to be spent on high-value creative efforts. Productions will also enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having their content, including camera raw files, protected by automatic processes that distribute data across several AWS Regions. 

Avid and Amazon Studios expect to have cloud-based, production-ready solutions by fourth quarter 2022.
