Avid AI Developments Inspired by Ada Lovelace
Sitting, staring out the window might not seem like work. It may seem like daydreaming. Like lacking focus. Like seeking an escape from the task in hand. But in truth, staring out the window IS working. Seeking inspiration in the beauty which surrounds us, in the natural world or the urban landscape upon which we gaze. There is no one route to be inspired, no defined path. But inspiration is what lies behind the products and solutions Avid offers, and continues to deliver, and our teams find inspiration in many ways. Ada Lovelace is our latest inspiration specifically for Avid AI developments. You may not know, or even have heard, of Ada Lovelace, but she is a critical figure in the development of computing and one of the founding mothers (not fathers) of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). It is important to highlight her as a founding mother, because much of history has focused on the founding fathers, with the role of women if not airbrushed, then very much pushed into the background. Ada Lovelace was not a woman to be pushed into the background of the 19th century’s scientific community, even though she died young, at age 36.
So while you may not have heard of her — and we are going to enlighten you, do not worry — you may have heard of some of the men in her life. For example, her father, was the poet Lord Byron — a rogue if ever there was one. She worked with the mathematician Charles Babbage — the man, yes of course, the man, credited with building the first computing machine. This was all in the 1800s and here we are in the 21st century and we have a film about a female shining a light on issues with the patriarchy. How some things do not change.
But at Avid, we want to celebrate Ada Lovelace and pay tribute to her work. Why? Well, she was a truly remarkable woman. Not only did she work with Babbage on that first computer, but she was one of the first to recognize that machines could be used for more than just number-crunching; they could manipulate symbols and data to perform tasks.
She also made the connection between mathematics and art, recognizing that math could be a tool used for artistic expression. She developed the concept of machine intelligence, and her work is credited by some as the bridge between early mechanical computing and development of computer science in the 20th and 21st centuries.
It is her work on making that link between computing and the possibility of artificial intelligence that is so important. Without it, would developments such as ChatGPT, Bard, and others even exist today? Her early influence and papers are that influential. That is why we are developing our AI solutions with the name Avid Ada, to celebrate this inspirational woman and to acknowledge her contribution to the scientific world.
Her work is recognized within the scientific community — perhaps more now than at the time — and since 2009, the second Tuesday in October is designated as Ada Lovelace Day. It is a celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with many events taking place across the globe to commemorate the contribution made by her and many other women in these fields.
At Avid, we’re always innovating to support business growth. That’s why we’re excited to integrate AI technologies into existing solutions, as well as develop new products and services to address changing business needs.
Avid Ada enables all Avid AI developments. Empowering content creators and media companies with the ability to improve efficiency, engage audiences more effectively, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape.
So, when you hear about Avid Ada, know that we are standing on the shoulders of giants — as Isaac Newton famously said — and raising the profile of a lesser-known heroine of the age of artificial intelligence. Thank you, Ada!
