2024 has marked a stellar year for Avid’s innovation ingest and playout solution, Avid | Stream IO, and visitors to the IBC show in Amsterdam got a preview of what is coming next. And it is big news.

Avid | Stream IO at IBC2024

Having supported SDI workflows since it was launched in August 2023, the forthcoming Avid | Stream IO 2024.10 release, showcased in the Avid booth, will add IP-based ingest and playout, among a host of other features.

The support includes both compressed IP, following the SMPT 2110 protocol, and uncompressed IP streams SRT and RTMP. As much of the broadcast industry remains in transition from SDI to IP, Avid | Stream IO now provides an ideal solution to bridge that move. Customers with existing SDI infrastructure can take advantage of Avid | Stream IO’s current feature set, knowing that when the time comes for them to move to IP, that Avid | Stream IO will be there to continue delivering.

“This is a major milestone for Avid | Stream IO,” says Martin Appleton, Avid Senior Manager of Graphics and Video Servers. “Customers have been telling us that the ability for an ingest and playout solution to cover both SDI and IP-based workflows is highly desirable as the transition to IP is going to take some time.”

More new features

The addition of IP-based workflow support is only one of the new features coming in the next update, included for all customers on an existing subscription. They include: support for Avid DNxHD 1080p 50 and 59.94, additional hardware support with the addition of Supermicro to Dell and HP options, enhanced telemetry monitoring, and further OSD (On-Screen Display) options.

Stream IO Playout

Since the launch, Avid | Stream IO has added significant new features such as two and eight channel options, additional codecs including AVCLongG and support for UHD formats Avid DNxHR and XAVCi Class 300, plus the ability to create channel-specific playlists.

Avid | Stream IO incorporates many of the favorite features of Avid AirSpeed and the FastServe family of servers, plus additional capabilities not available in either server, making it the ideal solution for customers already working with MediaCentral.

“The ability to drop Avid | Stream IO into an existing Avid MediaCentral workflow with ease, now with the support for IP-based ingest and playout too, makes it a powerful workflow enabler,” Appleton adds.
