Inside Volume Studios: The Fully Integrated Media Hub Powered by Avid

Volume Studios is a fully integrated recording facility in Los Angeles that’s built to shape the future of media. Whether it’s film, audio, live broadcast, or immersive post production.

In this exclusive tour, Paul Jackson and Tyler Unland from Volume take us through their facilities to show us how their equipment is configured to put integration and flexibility into their clients’ hands. From their live stage setup to the Dolby Atmos® theater, Volume Studios is an end-to-end facility designed for creators.

The soundstage

Within the walls of Volume Studios is a 2,000-square-foot soundstage that they use as a hub for concerts, live panels, branded content, and unique experiences. Volume has built a name for themselves for hosting events and shows, and their live stage is at the heart of it.

The Avid VENUE | S6L system is connected to the stage via robust tie-lines and multiple stage boxes, as well as a Dante connection to the rest of the facility, which ensures zero-latency performance and flexible routing to and from all studio rooms.

Dolby Atmos Theater

Volume’s Dolby Atmos Theater features a 17.1.6 configuration for fully immersive mixing, playback, and screenings. The room is centered around the Pro Tools | MTRX II interface and a 32-fader Avid S6 control surface for Atmos mixing through pristine A/D and D/A conversion. The room also includes a dedicated Dolby Atmos Renderer via Mac Mini and total Dante network integration to enable live downmixes and seamless routing from anywhere in the facility.

Tyler, the chief engineer at Volume, showed us how the room was designed and how the MTRX II serves as the core of the system, connecting everything from outdoor stage inputs (110 channels!) to their immersive playback environment for post production, screenings, and repurposing back catalogs in Atmos.
