Avid Celebrates Editors at 2024 ACE Eddie Awards

Celebrating Editors 1862x1040

We recognized the hard work of film and television editors at the 2024 ACE Eddie Awards, held at UCLA Royce Hall in Los Angeles. Avid and Z by HP kicked off the celebration with a pre-award party that brought together hundreds of editors, including Eddie Award nominees and honorees.

Our VIP reception was buzzing with excitement as everyone mingled, toasted colleagues, and their shared love for storytelling before heading into the theater for the awards ceremony honoring the best in television, feature film, and documentary editing. Even the Filmmaker of the Year Golden Eddie recipient, John Waters, was holding court, talking with guests and posing for photos. Seeing him receive this award was extra special since I went to school in Baltimore (long ago) and have been a fan of his work for years. If you are in L.A. before August, you must check out his Pope of Trash exhibit at the Academy Museum.

Deb Sanders, Avid’s Chief Customer Officer, greeted editors and their guests.

“It was an amazing evening, with a room filled with some of the most inspiring, collaborative, storytellers (editors) in the film and TV industry," Sanders says. “We at Avid are so grateful to play a part in enabling these talented creatives as they pursue their craft and to celebrate their accomplishments.”

“The absolutely essential role that editors play in creating an impactful story, and how every aspect of a film or TV show is shaped by them, deserves tremendous respect and recognition,” says Matt Feury, Avid Senior Director of Market Solutions, Post & Video, and host of The Rough Cut podcast. “That’s what makes the Eddies so special. It’s a moment where we can celebrate editors, and they can honor one another. Editors are absolutely essential to us at Avid, and it’s a privilege to both sponsor and take part in this celebration.”

Avid has hosted the reception for many years to acknowledge the editing community’s and industry’s use of Avid Media Composer. In fact, most of the award nominees cut with Media Composer to craft their work and praise the tools and functions that Media Composer provides.

“ScriptSync, especially with a featured doc where we had dozens of interviews, each an hour to two hours each, ScriptSync is essential,” says ACE Eddie Award nominee, Jake Hostetter, co-editor of the documentary, Little Richard: I am Everything, “I can't imagine cutting without it.”

“I work in multicam comedy and Avid does multicamera functionality better than any other NLE software,” says Joseph Fulton, Editor and ACE Eddie nominee for Frasier: Blind Date. “It would be very hard for me to do my job without Avid.”

A beloved Eddies tradition is the Avid nominee and honoree signing board. Starting in 2014, nominees have signed the board next to their names at the nominee reception and at the Avid Pre-Award event. Students nominated for the student competition get to add their signatures next to many editors who they look up to, once students themselves, who are now editing major feature films and television shows.

These autographed boards are framed and then are displayed at Avid’s Burbank offices and studios.

“The joy tenured editors expressed about sharing their knowledge with students and mentees was a testament to the type of people they are.... caring, brilliant and generous,” Sanders says. “As I have stated before, AVID has the best customers in the world!”
