Avid Learning Announces Open-Book User Certification Exams
Avid Learning is introducing an important evolution in how creative professionals and students earn Avid Certification. Beginning this year, all Avid Certified User exams will transition to an open-book format, a shift that reflects today’s real-world creative workflows and the collaborative, problem-solving nature of modern production environments.
For years, Avid’s ACSR (Avid Certified Support Representative) engineering exams have embraced an open-book model. Extending this approach to all User certifications marks a major step in modernizing the learning experience and aligning it with how creatives work every day: using their tools, exploring solutions, and applying knowledge in meaningful ways.
This change isn’t about lowering difficulty; it’s about elevating relevance. Creativity thrives not on memorization, but on understanding processes, navigating tools, and solving complex challenges with confidence. As Director of Learning Johnathon Amayo explains:

Assessments vs. Certification Exams: A Clear Distinction
With this update, Avid is also clarifying the difference between course assessments and official certification exams:
- Assessments at the end of each Avid class are practice tools designed to reinforce learning.
- Certification exams — Specialist or Professional — must be scheduled separately and are required to earn an official Avid Certification.
Participation in assessments is optional. Any student who feels prepared may proceed directly to a certification exam.
