Why Music Creator Klypso Loves Pro Tools
“What I bring that’s special to your project is my energy and my soul. Music is so energy-related, I just end up being the antenna that just passes the energy through. Kind of like a wire.”
That’s how Joseph Mourad—famously known as Klypso—thinks of his work as a music creator, producer, and audio engineer. But he’s more than just a conduit for musical ideas—he’s an architect of them. He’s also a “bona fide Pro Tools hustler,” he says.
Klypso has been working with Pro Tools for the last 18 years of his life, racking up credits and collaborations with the likes of Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Ne-Yo, Flo Rida, Too $hort, Lupe Fiasco, and more. And he insists on only creating with Pro Tools.
“I use Pro Tools to create my music, to write my songs, to record my songs, to mix them… my workflow is very quick in it,” he explains. “I think it would hinder my workflow if I went to another DAW. There’s a sound that you get out of Pro Tools that I’m very married to.”
He also prefers the flexibility he gets from making beats in Pro Tools. Klypso is the type of music creator who likes to work with a hybrid setup of music technology that includes both plugins and outboard studio gear—or “old-school new-school,” as he calls it. And he insists that working in Pro Tools is the only way he’s able to do that, adding “If Pro Tools didn’t exist, maybe I wouldn’t make music.”
“The challenges that Pro Tools has helped me overcome are life-changing challenges. It’s the DAW that I choose for a lifetime. It’s my go-to baby—that’s why I won’t leave Pro Tools.”
