Smart tool
The Smart Tool in Pro Tools combines the Selector, Trim, Grabber, and Fade tools into one, automatically switching functions based on your cursor position. It adapts to different views—whether you're working in Waveform View (Audio), Clips View (MIDI), Notes View (MIDI), or Automation/Controller Views—letting you perform edits without changing tools manually or having to remember keyboard shortcuts.
Activating the Smart Tool
To enable the Smart Tool in Pro Tools, you can do the following:
1. Click the Smart Tool Icon:
In the Edit window, click on the Smart Tool icon, which is located above the track lanes in the toolbar. It’s the set of three icons (Selector, Trim, and Grabber) grouped together.
2. Use Keyboard Shortcut:
You can also activate the Smart Tool using the shortcut Command+7 (Mac) or Control+7 (Windows) on the numeric keypad.
Using the Smart Tool on Clips

- Grabber Tool: Position the cursor in the lower half of the clip to move it along the timeline.
- Trim Tool: Hover near the start or end of the clip to extend or shorten it.
- Fade In/Out: Position the cursor near the top of the clip at the start or end to create a fade, dragging to set the fade length. Fades follow your Default Fade Settings.
Using the Smart Tool on Notes
- Marquee Selector: Place the cursor so it doesn’t cover any notes to select a time range.
- Grabber Tool: Hover over the middle of a MIDI note to move a selection of notes.
- Trim Tool: Position the cursor near the start or end of a note (or a selection of notes) to adjust its length.
- Velocity Trim Tool: Hover over a note and press Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) to adjust the velocity.
Using the Smart Tool on Automation and Controller Data
- Selector Tool: Position the cursor in the bottom 75% of the automation or controller lane to select breakpoints.
- Trim Tool: Hover in the top 25% of the lane to trim selected breakpoints. Use Command+Shift (Mac) or Control+Shift (Windows) for fine control.
- Grabber Tool: Press Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) and click to add breakpoints. You can also adjust existing breakpoints by hovering near them. Use Shift to constrain vertical movement, or Command+Shift (Mac) or Control+Shift (Windows) for fine control.
When to Use the Smart Tool
The Smart Tool is ideal when you need to perform multiple types of edits quickly and seamlessly without switching between tools. It’s especially useful in the following scenarios:
- Quick editing: When you need to move, trim, and fade clips frequently during an editing session, the Smart Tool lets you do it all in one go, saving time.
- Audio comping: For tasks like dialogue editing, vocal comping, or any situation where you need to clean up multiple takes quickly, the Smart Tool allows you to select, trim, and adjust audio efficiently.
- Adding fades and crossfades: If you need to frequently add smooth transitions between clips, the Smart Tool’s Fade functionality lets you create fades and crossfades without switching tools, keeping the editing process fluid.
Tips for Using the Smart Tool
- Precision placement: Use the Smart Tool in Slip Mode for precise, unrestricted edits when you need control over placement and timing.
- Use with Grid Mode: For music production or rhythmic editing, enable Grid Mode along with the Smart Tool to snap clips to the grid while still having access to selection, trimming, and fade tools.
- Hover for fades: When working with fades, remember that hovering near the top corners of a clip activates the Fade Tool. This saves time compared to manually selecting the fade option.
