Solo Safe
Solo Safe in Pro Tools prevents a track from being muted when other tracks are soloed. Normally, when you hit Solo on a track, every other track is muted. But with Solo Safe enabled, a track will stay audible even during solo operations. This is especially useful on Aux tracks, busses, or effects returns, so you don’t accidentally cut off shared effects like reverb or delay when soloing a related track.
Enable Solo Safe
Step 1. Open the Mix Window
- Go to Window > Mix or press Command + = (Mac) / Ctrl + = (Windows).
Step 2. Enable Solo Safe
- Command-click (Mac) or Ctrl-click (Windows) the Solo button on the track you want to Solo Safe.
- The Solo button will turn gray, indicating that Solo Safe is active.
Step 3. Confirm
- The track will now remain audible whenever other tracks are soloed.
Disable Solo Safe
- Command-click (Mac) or Ctrl-click (Windows) the Solo button again.
- The button will return to its normal state, and the track will behave like any other when soloing.
Tips for Using Solo Safe
- Aux tracks and returns: Solo Safe is essential for Aux tracks with shared effects like reverb, delay, or parallel compression — otherwise, those effects would disappear when soloing a source track.
- Submix busses: Use Solo Safe on drum or vocal busses so they stay active when soloing individual tracks inside the group.
- Avoid overuse: Don’t put Solo Safe on every track — it defeats the purpose of soloing. Apply it strategically to tracks that act as signal paths for others.
