The edit window in Pro Tools: An overview

The Edit window is where you work with audio and MIDI on a timeline. It’s the main space for recording, arranging, and detailed editing.

What You’ll See in the Edit Window

  • Tracks
Tracks are shown as horizontal rows and represent different instruments, like guitar, drums, keyboard, or vocals.
  • Clips
Clips are containers for recorded (or imported) Audio and MIDI. Clips live inside of Tracks, and you can arrange them along your Timeline to create an arrangement.
  • Track Controls
On the left side of each track:
    • Record Enable: Arms the track for recording.
    • Input Monitoring (I): Lets you listen to the track’s input signal without recording it.
    • Solo/Mute (S/M): Isolates (Solo) or silences (Mute) the track during playback.
    • Track View Selector: Allows you to choose what the track displays, such as Waveform, Volume, or Automation data.
  • Inserts and I/O
You can customize the Edit Window to display key elements from the Mix Window, such as Inserts and I/O.
  • Rulers
At the top, rulers display Bars|Beats, Timecode, Tempo, and Markers—helpful for navigating and syncing your session.
  • Edit Tools
Above the tracks, you’ll find tools like Trim, Selector, Grabber, and Smart Tool for precise editing.

Why Use the Edit Window?

  • Perfect for arranging clips, tightening performances, and detailed edits.
  • Gives you a visual timeline for your entire session.
  • Complements the Mix Window by focusing on structure rather than balance.
