Color coding tracks and clips

Color coding in Pro Tools makes it easier to organize and navigate large sessions. By assigning colors to tracks and clips, you can quickly identify instruments, group related elements, or highlight important edits. Track colors appear in the track header and clip area, while clips can be colored individually for even more detailed organization.

Assign Colors to Tracks

Step 1. Open the color palette

In the Edit or Mix Window, right-click the track name.
Or double-click the color strip to the left of the track.

Step 2. Choose a track color

Select a color from the palette.
The chosen color will appear in the track header and in the clip area.

Assign Colors to Multiple Tracks

Step 1. Select multiple tracks

Use Shift-click to select a range of tracks.
Use Command-click (Mac) or Ctrl-click (Windows) to select non-adjacent tracks.

Step 2. Apply color to selected tracks

Right-click one of the selected track names and choose Track Color.
Pick a color from the palette.
The color will apply to all selected tracks.

Change Clip Color

Step 1. Select a clip

In the Edit Window, right-click directly on the clip you want to color.

Step 2. Apply a color

Choose Color from the menu.
Select a color from the palette to apply it to that specific clip.

Note:

By default, clips adopt the color of the track they’re recorded on.
You can override this to make clip colors independent, giving you finer visual control.

Tips for Organizing with Color Coded Tracks

Group instruments by color: For example, make all drum tracks blue, guitars green, and vocals red.
Highlight key sections: Use bright colors to mark important clips like transitions, effects, or edits.
Use contrast wisely: Differentiate similar instruments (for example, lead versus backing vocals) with shades of the same color family.
Stay consistent: Develop a color system that you use across sessions for faster recognition.
