Bouncing stems

A stem is a single audio file that represents a mix of related tracks—like drums, guitars, or vocals—combined into one element. For example, instead of exporting every drum mic or vocal harmony as separate tracks, you can bounce them together as a single “Drums” or “Vocals” stem. This makes it easier to share, remix, or master your session without sending every individual track.

How to Bounce Stem Groups

1. Prep the Session

  • Create a Routing Folder for each stem group (e.g., Drums, Guitars, Vocals, FX, BGV).
  • Move the related tracks into their respective Routing Folders.
  • Name each folder clearly (e.g., Drum Bus,Vocal Bus) to keep your stems organized.
  • Decide whether to include effects:
    • Processed stems: leave inserts and automation active.
    • Clean stems: bypass or deactivate plugins you don’t want printed.

2. Solo the Routing Folder

  • Solo the Routing Folder for the stem you want to bounce.
  • Make sure the folder’s output is routed to your main mix output or stem bus.

3. Open the Bounce Window

  • Go to File > Bounce to Disk.
  • Confirm that the Bounce Source matches your session’s main output.
  • Enable Offline if you want a faster-than-real-time bounce.

4. Choose Format and Name

  • File Type: WAV (recommended) or AIFF.
  • Bit Depth / Sample Rate: match your session or delivery specs.
  • Interleaved: On for stereo stems; Off if you need split mono files.
  • Name your stem file (e.g., SongTitle_STEM_Drums.wav) and choose a destination folder.

5. Bounce

  • Click Bounce to export the stem.
  • Repeat for each Routing Folder in your session.

Tips for Bouncing Stems in Pro Tools

  • Stay Consistent: If you’re exporting stems for mixing, mastering, or delivery, make sure all stems:
    • Start at the same timecode or session start.
    • End at the same time, including silence or reverb tails. This ensures that when someone imports your stems into another DAW or mix session, they line up perfectly and recreate your mix without phase or timing issues.
  • Creative or Sampling Workflows: If you’re bouncing stems for remixing, sampling, or sound design, exact start and end points aren’t as critical. You can export shorter sections, loops, or isolated moments to keep files lightweight and focused on what you need.
  • Include Effects Tails: Extend your selection or enable post-roll to capture the full decay of reverb or delay effects.
  • Check Signal Path: Confirm each Routing Folder feeds the correct output before bouncing to avoid missing audio.
  • Choose Pre- or Post-Fader:
    • Pre-fader captures the unaltered bus level (no volume automation).
    • Post-fader includes automation, mutes, and final mix levels.
  • Apply Dither When Needed: Use dither when exporting stems to a lower bit depth than your session (for example, from 32-bit float or 24-bit down to 16-bit for CD or final delivery). Dither helps prevent distortion when reducing bit depth. You can insert a dither plug-in on the master track or enable dither during bounce.
  • Mono or Stereo: Use mono stems for single-source elements (e.g., bass, dialogue) and stereo for groups, ambiences, or effects returns.
  • Quality Check: Import your bounced stems into a new session and play them together to confirm alignment, phase coherence, and completeness.
  • File Naming: Use a clear, consistent format (e.g., Project_STEM_Drums.wav or Episode01_STEM_Dialogue.wav) so revisions and deliveries stay organized.
  • Archiving: Save stems with version numbers or date stamps for easy tracking and recall later in the production or post process.
