Transport controls in Pro Tools: An overview
The Transport section is your command center for playback, recording, and navigation. It’s where you control the flow of your session.
What You’ll See in the Transport Controls
- Play, Stop, and Pause
Basic playback controls to start, stop, or pause your session. Alternatively, you can use the spacebar to start and stop playback.
- Record
Arms Pro Tools to record audio or MIDI when you hit Play. Used with track record-enable buttons.
- Fast Forward / Rewind, Return to Zero / Go to End
Moves the playhead quickly through the session. Instantly jump to the start or end of your timeline.
- Counter Display
Shows your current position in Bars|Beats, Timecode, or Minutes:Seconds—depending on your timeline settings.
- Pre-Roll / Post-Roll
Adds extra time before or after playback/recording starts—useful for giving performers a lead-in.
Why It Matters

- Navigate quickly and set up precise recording conditions.
- Works hand-in-hand with the Edit and Mix windows.
