Cutting clips
Cutting audio or MIDI clips in Pro Tools allows you to edit, rearrange, or remove sections of your recording for precise control over your session. You can achieve this by using the Separate Clip function or the Trim Tool. Here’s how to perform these essential editing tasks.
Separate Clip
The Separate Clip function allows you to cut audio, MIDI clips, or MIDI notes into smaller sections, giving you more control over your editing. Here are two ways to separate clips or notes:
Shortcut with Command Focus Enabled:
- If Edit Command Focus is enabled, you can quickly separate a clip by pressing B at the cursor point or a range selection. This allows for even faster cutting without needing to use multi-key shortcuts.
For multi-key shortcuts:
- Place the Cursor and Cut:
- Position the cursor at the point where you want to cut the clip.
- Go to Edit > Separate Clip > At Selection, or use the shortcut Command + E on Mac or Control + E on Windows.
- The clip will be split at the cursor point.
- Highlight a Region and Separate:
- Highlight the section of the clip by clicking and dragging across the region you want to cut.
- Go to Edit > Separate Clip > At Selection, or use the shortcut Command + E on Mac or Control + E on Windows.
- The highlighted region will become its own clip.
