Nudge clips

The Nudge value determines how far clips, MIDI notes, or automation are moved when nudging, sliding them left or right on the timeline. This feature allows for precise adjustments, helping you fine-tune the timing and placement of clips, MIDI notes, or automation with ease. Here's how to nudge clips in Pro Tools:

How to Nudge Clips in Pro Tools

1. Select the Clip(s):

  • Use the Time Grabber or Selector Tool to select the clip(s) you want to nudge. You can select clips across multiple tracks. Make sure the entire clip is selected.

2. Set the Nudge Time Scale:

  • Go to the Nudge Value dropdown in the Edit Window Toolbar and choose a time scale from the available options:
    • Bars | Beats
    • Minutes | Seconds
    • Timecode
    • Feet + Frames
    • Samples
    • Follow Main Time Scale

3. Choose a Nudge Value:

  • Select a nudge value from the dropdown menu based on your chosen time scale. You can also manually type a specific value into the Nudge Value field for more precise adjustments.

4. Nudge the clip(s):

  • Press + (plus) on your numeric keypad or > on your keyboard to move the selected clip(s) forward by the Nudge value.
  • Press - (minus) on your numeric keypad or < on your keyboard to move the clip(s) backward by the Nudge value.

How to Choose a Nudge Value

Choosing the correct nudge value depends on the type of project you're working on. Here’s a breakdown of each time scale:

  • Bars | Beats:
    • Use: Ideal for music production when you need to nudge clips by musical intervals.
    • Measurement: Clips are moved by note values, such as 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes, etc.
    • Application: Used for rhythmically aligning clips in musical compositions or when editing to a specific tempo.
  • Minutes | Seconds:
    • Use: Best for projects requiring precise timing control in minutes and seconds.
    • Measurement: Nudges clips by specific increments of time, like seconds or milliseconds.
    • Application: Useful in podcasts, live performances, and other audio projects where duration matters.
  • Timecode:
    • Use: Essential for video post-production when syncing audio to video frames.
    • Measurement: Measures time in hours, minutes, seconds, and frames (e.g., 01:00:12:15).
    • Application: Used for frame-accurate audio alignment in video projects.
  • Feet + Frames:
    • Use: Used specifically in film post-production, where timing is based on physical film length.
    • Measurement: Measures in feet and frames, with each foot of film containing a set number of frames (e.g., 16 frames per foot for 35mm film).
    • Application: Allows precise audio synchronization in traditional film editing workflows.
  • Samples:
    • Use: Offers the highest resolution for micro-scale adjustments.
    • Measurement: Moves clips by a specific number of samples (the smallest increments of digital audio).
    • Application: Ideal for fine-tuning audio at the microscopic level, such as phase alignment.
  • Follow Main Time Scale:
    • Use: Matches the nudge value to the session’s primary time scale for consistent timing.
    • Application: Ensures that the nudge function aligns with the main session time scale for easy integration into your workflow.
