When to Use Beat Detective
Beat Detective is most effective when working with rhythmic audio or MIDI material that has clear attack transients, such as drums, guitar, or bass. It’s less effective with material that has softer attacks or legato phrasing, like strings or vocals. Use Beat Detective for the following tasks:
- Extracting Tempo: Capture the tempo of an audio or MIDI passage, even with varying tempos or a swing feel. Beat Detective generates Bar|Beat markers from to which other clips can be quantized.
- Creating Groove Templates: Extract the rhythmic and dynamic feel of a passage to create DigiGrooves, which can be applied to other tracks via Groove Conform (for audio) or Groove Quantize (for MIDI).
- Conforming and Tightening Audio Clips: Use Clip Separation to break audio into distinct clips at transient points, then use Clip Conform to adjust the timing of those clips to match the session's tempo map. This is useful for tightening up performances or aligning audio loops.
- Aligning Loops: Match loops with different tempos to your session without affecting their pitch and tone, a great alternative to time-stretching.
- Edit Smoothing: Automatically trim and crossfade clips using Edit Smoothing to fill gaps and ensure smooth transitions between conformed clips.
Opening the Beat Detective Window
To open the Beat Detective window:
1. Make a Selection: Highlight the specific audio or MIDI section you want to work on in the Edit window. This can be a single clip or a range of clips.
2. Access Beat Detective:
- Choose Event > Beat Detective from the menu bar.
- Or press Command+8 (Mac) or Control+8 (Windows) on the numeric keypad.
The Beat Detective window is a floating panel, allowing real-time adjustments while viewing the beat triggers in your selected clips in the Edit window.
Beat Detective Modes
The Beat Detective window is divided into three key sections: Operation, Selection, and Detection. Depending on your chosen Operation mode, the available controls will change. Here are the primary modes:
- Bar|Beat Marker Generation: Generates Bar|Beat markers based on detected transients.
- Groove Template Extraction: Extracts rhythmic information as DigiGroove templates.
- Clip Separation (Audio Only): Separates audio into clips based on detected transients.
- Clip Conform (Audio Only): Conforms separated clips to a session’s tempo map or groove template.
- Edit Smoothing (Audio Only): Trims gaps and adds crossfades for seamless transitions between clips.
Defining a Beat Detective Selection
To analyze a section accurately with Beat Detective, you must define the selection range, time signature, and other details. Follow these steps:
- Select Audio or MIDI Material: In the Edit window, highlight a range of audio or MIDI material. Make sure your selection starts and ends precisely on the beat.
- Open Beat Detective: Go to Event > Beat Detective.
- Define the Selection Range:
- If the tempo and meter of the audio selection don’t match the session’s tempo, manually enter the Time Signature and Start/End Bar|Beat.
- For unknown lengths, use the Tap End B|B button to automatically calculate the selection’s end point while playing back the audio.
Beat Detective Analysis
Beat Detective provides three analysis algorithms suitable for different material:
- High Emphasis: Ideal for high-frequency, inharmonic content like cymbals and hi-hats.
- Low Emphasis: Works well with low-frequency instruments like bass guitar or kick drum.
- Enhanced Resolution: Suitable for a wide range of material, including full mixes and loops.
Beat Detection Across Multiple Tracks
When analyzing multiple tracks simultaneously, Beat Detective independently analyzes each track. Detected transients in any track will trigger Beat Markers across all selected tracks. Keep in mind:
- For closely aligned events across multiple tracks, Beat Detective will prioritize the first detected transient.
Beat Detective Requirements
RAM Considerations
Beat Detective can be memory-intensive, especially when working with long selections or multiple tracks. To optimize performance:
- Increase the RAM in your computer.
- Work with shorter selections when possible.
- Reduce the Levels of Undo in Editing Preferences.
Accuracy Tips
- For the best results, ensure your selection starts exactly at the beginning of a beat.
- Use Loop Playback to verify the accuracy of your selection.
- Make sure the selection’s tempo and meter align with the session’s tempo and meter before capturing the selection.
