The mix window in Pro Tools: An overview

What You’ll See in the Mix Window

• Channel Strips
  Each track appears as a vertical strip. These strips include everything you need to mix: inserts, sends, pan, fader, and meters.

• Inserts
  Slots for plugins like EQ, compression, or reverb. This is where you shape the sound of each track.

• Sends
  Used to route audio to effects like reverb or delay, or to create headphone mixes. Sends let you route the signal to another destination without changing the main output.

• Input/Output (I/O) Section
  Shows where the track’s audio is coming from (input) and where it’s going (output). This is essential for routing to buses, hardware, or your main mix.

• Pan Control
  Lets you position the track in the stereo field—left, right, or center.

• Fader and Meter
  Controls the track’s volume. This is the main tool for balancing levels in your mix. Meters are visual indicators of signal level so you can avoid clipping and maintain proper gain staging.

• Automation Mode
  Lets you write and play back volume, pan, and plugin changes over time.
