Importing video

Pro Tools supports video playback for post-production, scoring, and sound-to-picture workflows. You can import video files directly into your session, align them with timecode, and even bring in the audio embedded in the file. Once imported, the video appears on its own Video Track and plays back in the Video window alongside your audio tracks.

Import a Video File into Your Session

Step 1. Locate your video file

On Mac, open the Finder.
On Windows, open File Explorer.
Navigate to the folder where the video is stored.

Step 2. Drag the file into Pro Tools

Drag the video file into an empty space in the Edit Window timeline.
The Video Import Options window opens automatically.

Step 3. Choose import options

In the Video Import Options dialog, you can:

Choose whether to import audio from the video file (if available).
Select whether to spot the video to its original timecode or place it at the session start.

Step 4. Confirm the import

Click OK to confirm your choices.
If you chose to import audio, Pro Tools will prompt you to select a save location for that audio file.

Step 5. Verify placement

Pro Tools creates a Video Track and places the video at the location you selected.
The video also opens in the Video window for playback and editing.

Sync and Frame Rate Considerations

To avoid sync issues:

Make sure your session’s frame rate matches the video file.
You can check or change the frame rate under Setup > Session.
If the rates don’t match, playback may drift out of sync.

Tips for Working with Video

Use reference audio: If your video includes dialogue or temp audio, import it to help with spotting effects and music.
Keep video resolution reasonable: Very high-resolution video may affect playback performance.
Spot to timecode: Use original timecode when working on film, TV, or other locked picture projects.
Organize assets: Store video and audio in the same session folder for easy relinking.
