Creating a master bus
A Master Bus (or Master Fader) is the final stereo output stage of your Pro Tools session. It allows you to monitor and control the overall level, apply global effects, and prevent clipping before export. By default, all audio in your session routes through the Master Track, making it essential for mixing and mastering workflows.
Create a Master Track
Step 1. Open the New Tracks dialog
- Go to Track > New to open the New Tracks dialog box.
Step 2. Configure the track type
- From the first dropdown menu, select Stereo (or Mono if your session requires it).
- From the second dropdown menu, select Master Fader.
Step 3. Add the Master Track
- Click Create to add the Master Track to your session.
- The new Master Fader track appears in both the Mix and Edit windows.
Step 4. Confirm routing
- All audio tracks in your session automatically route through the Master Track.
- Use the Master Fader to control your overall output level.
Tips for Using a Master Bus
- Use a limiter or maximizer on the Master Fader to prevent digital clipping.
- Leave headroom (keep peaks below 0 dBFS) to ensure clean audio when exporting or mastering.
- Apply bus processing carefully — light compression, EQ, or saturation can help glue a mix together.
- Monitor multiple outputs by routing the Master Fader to headphones, speakers, or alternate monitoring paths.
