How to Freeze a Track in Pro Tools

Follow these steps to freeze or unfreeze one or more tracks in your Pro Tools session:

1. Select a Track:

• Select the track(s) you want to freeze.

2. Freeze the Track:

• Click on the Track Freeze icon in the Track Controls, or
• Right-click the track name and select Freeze, or
• Go to Track > Freeze from the top menu, or
• Use the shortcut Option-Shift-Click (Mac) or Alt-Shift-Click (Windows) to freeze all selected tracks.

3. Unfreeze the Track:

• Follow the same steps and select Unfreeze to restore the track to its original state for further editing.

What Gets Frozen?

When you freeze a track in Pro Tools, certain elements are rendered into the frozen audio, while others remain active for further adjustment. Here’s what gets frozen:

• Plug-ins and Automation: All plug-ins and their automation are rendered (unless you choose to freeze only up to a certain insert).
• Clip Gain: Any clip gain adjustments are included in the frozen audio.
• Clip Effects: Effects applied at the clip level are rendered into the frozen track.
• HEAT: If enabled pre-insert, HEAT processing will be included.
• Elastic Audio: Any Elastic Audio processing will also be frozen.

However, the following controls (and automation) remain editable, allowing further changes without unfreezing the track:

• Volume
• Volume Trim
• Mute
• Pan
• Send Levels and Mutes
• Plug-in automation for unfrozen plug-ins (if freezing up to an insert).

Freeze Up to This Insert

Pro Tools allows you to freeze up to a specific insert on a track, which is useful if you want to freeze a virtual instrument but still adjust other effects such as EQ or compression.

To freeze up to a specific insert:

1. Ensure Insert View is Visible:

• Make sure the Inserts view is enabled in either the Mix or Edit window.

2. Right-Click the Insert:

• Right-click on the insert up to which you want to freeze the track.

3. Choose Freeze Up to This Insert:

• Select Freeze Up to This Insert from the dropdown. Frozen inserts will appear italicized and grayed out, with a Track Freeze icon displayed next to them.

Tips for Using Track Freeze in Pro Tools

• Free Up Processing Power: Use Track Freeze to reduce the CPU load when working with multiple plug-ins or virtual instruments in larger sessions. Freezing tracks allows you to keep working smoothly without maxing out system resources.
• Collaborate Seamlessly: When sharing sessions with collaborators who don’t have the same plug-ins, freeze your tracks to render the processing. This ensures your collaborators hear the exact same audio without needing the same plug-ins.
• Freeze Up to a Specific Insert: Freeze only up to a particular insert (such as a virtual instrument) to keep your processing plug-ins (like EQ or compression) active for further tweaks while keeping the main sound locked in place.
