Clip effects

Clip Effects let you apply powerful sound-shaping tools—EQ, filters, dynamics, and polarity adjustments—directly to individual clips in your session. Instead of adding a plugin or automating a track, you can make quick, targeted changes right where they’re needed.

Whether you’re balancing levels between takes, removing mic pops, or matching tone between performances, Clip Effects provide a fast, non-destructive way to fine-tune your audio at the clip level—ideal for dialogue, music, and post workflows alike.

Opening the Clip Effects Panel

1. Select a clip (or multiple clips).

2. In the Edit window, click on a clip with the Grabber or Selector Tool.

3. In the Lower Dock strip, click the Clip Effects tab to open the editor.

Clip Effects Panel Overview

The Clip Effects panel is divided into several processing sections, giving you full control over level, tone, and dynamics for each clip.

Input Trim

  • Adjust the overall gain of the clip before EQ or dynamics processing. Drag up or down on the dB value, or click to type a precise value.

Polarity

  • Reverse the phase of a clip by clicking the Polarity (Ø) button—useful when aligning multi-mic recordings or correcting phase issues.

EQ

  • Shape your sound with a 4-band equalizer. Each band (HF, HMF, LMF, LF) can be enabled or disabled independently, with HF and LF bands switchable between shelf and peak modes. Adjust frequencies directly in the graph or by editing the numeric fields.

Filters

  • Use up to two filters for targeted frequency control. Choose filter type, frequency, and slope, or adjust the filter points directly in the EQ graph by dragging the small blue markers.

Dynamics

  • Control level and presence using the Expander/Gate and Compressor/Limiter modules. Drag values or type them in, and fine-tune Threshold and Ratio directly in the graph display for precise dynamic shaping.

When to Use Clip Effects

  • Quick and Easy adjustments: Clip Effects offer a quick way to adjust the EQ or dynamics of clips in a track without using plugins or track automation.
  • Fix issues like Mic Pops or Sibilance: Use a high pass or notch filter to fix issues focused on a specific section of a word.
  • Match takes on a track: Clip Effects are useful to match the tone of multiple takes or overdubs that share a track, before further mixing or plugin processing.

Tips for Using Clip Effects

  • Pre-Fader Processing: Like Clip Gain, Clip Effects are applied during playback before the audio passes through the mixer and plugins.
  • Save or Copy Settings: Clip Effects settings can be saved as presets, saved to the five quick preset slots, or copied and pasted, making it easy to re-use settings on multiple clips in your project.
  • Bypass Sections: The EQ, Filters and Dynamics sections of the Clip Effects panel can be turned on and off by clicking the green power button at the top-left of each section.
