Importing audio

In addition to recording directly into Pro Tools, you can import existing audio files from your computer. This is useful for working with pre-recorded parts, stems, sound effects, loops, or reference tracks. Pro Tools supports common formats like WAV, AIFF, and MP3, and you can either drop audio straight onto the timeline or add it to the Clip List for later use.

Import an Audio File into Your Session

Step 1. Locate your audio file

On Mac, use the Finder to navigate to the file.
On Windows, use File Explorer.

Step 2. Drag and drop into Pro Tools

Drag the file directly into an empty space in the Edit Window timeline.
Pro Tools automatically creates a new Audio Track for the file.

Step 3. Position in the timeline

The file appears at the point in the timeline where you dropped it.
Press Play to confirm the file imports and plays back correctly. (image)

Step 4. Import into the Clip List (optional)

Drag the file into the Clip List (on the right side of the Edit Window).
This imports the file into your session without placing it on a track.
Later, you can drag it from the Clip List into any track or timeline position. (image)

Supported File Formats

Pro Tools supports a wide range of professional and consumer audio formats, including:

WAV (most common in professional workflows)
AIFF
MP3
Other formats commonly used in audio production

If a file’s format or sample rate doesn’t match your session, Pro Tools can automatically convert it on import.

Tips for Importing Audio

Organize before importing: Keep audio files in a clearly labeled folder to avoid confusion.
Check sample rates: Matching your audio file’s sample rate to the session prevents unwanted pitch or speed changes.
Use the Clip List for options: Importing to the Clip List is ideal if you’re building a library of sounds or auditioning multiple takes.
Drag multiple files: You can select and drag multiple audio files at once to speed up your workflow.
