Connecting an audio interface

Connecting an audio interface to Pro Tools allows you to record instruments, microphones, and other audio sources with high-quality sound, as well as monitor your playback through speakers or headphones. Follow these steps to connect your interface and configure it properly within Pro Tools for both input and output.

Step-by-step instructions to connect an audio interface

1. Connect Your Audio Interface:

Plug your audio interface into your computer using the appropriate USB, Thunderbolt, or other connection type.
Make sure the volume is down on your speakers or headphones to avoid any sudden loud noises.
Ensure the audio interface is powered on.
Many entry-level audio interfaces are class-compliant and don’t require additional drivers. However, for more advanced interfaces, check the manufacturer’s instructions and install any necessary drivers.

2. Open Pro Tools:

Launch Pro Tools on your computer. Make sure your audio interface is connected and powered on before opening the software.
If this is your first time launching Pro Tools, you will be prompted to select your Audio Interface via the Playback Engine dialog box. If not, move on to the next step.

3. Set Your Playback Engine:

In Pro Tools, go to Setup > Playback Engine.
In the Playback Engine dropdown menu, select your audio interface as the device. Click OK to apply the changes.

4. Configure I/O Settings:

Go to Setup > I/O to configure your input/output settings. In the Input and Output tabs, verify that your audio interface's channels are properly assigned.[SS3]
If necessary, click Default to reset the I/O settings to match your audio interface’s configuration.

5. Test Your Setup:

Create a new audio track in Pro Tools by going to Track > New, then select Audio Track.
Set the input of the track to the corresponding input[SS5] [ZC6] of your audio interface where your instrument or microphone is connected.
Record-enable the track by clicking the Record button[SS7] in the track header and test the sound to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
