Change the Main Time Signature

Step 1. Show MIDI Controls

• (If hidden) Go to View > Transport > MIDI Controls to make sure the MIDI Controls section is visible in the Transport.

Step 2. Display the Meter ruler

• (If hidden) Go to View > Rulers > Meter to display the Meter ruler above your timeline.

Step 3. Edit the Meter value

• Locate the Meter field in the Transport window (defaults to 4/4).

• Double-click the Meter value to open the Meter Change window.
• Enter your new time signature (such as ¾ or 6/8).
• Click OK to apply the change.

Step 4. Confirm the change

• The Bars|Beats grid updates to reflect the new meter.
• If a click track is active, it automatically adjusts to match the new time signature.
• Play back a section to confirm accents and bar lines update correctly.

Insert a Time Signature Change Mid-Song

Step 1. Enable the Meter ruler

• Go to View > Rulers > Meter if the Meter ruler isn’t already visible.

Step 2. Choose the change location

• In the Edit Window, place the cursor at the bar or beat where you want the meter to change.

Step 3. Add a new meter

• Click the “+” icon in the Meter ruler at that location (or double-click inside the ruler).

• In the Meter Change window, enter the new time signature (such as 5/4 or 7/8).
• Click OK to confirm.

Step 4. Playback to verify

• The new meter appears in the Meter ruler and takes effect at the desired location.
• The timeline grid and click accents update automatically for that section.

Tips for Working with Time Signatures

• Use Bars|Beats view: Set the Main Counter to Bars|Beats for precise editing.
• Pair with tempo changes: Combine meter and tempo changes for dramatic feel shifts.
• Check your click accents: Open Click II to adjust accent and subdivision patterns.
• Experiment with odd meters: Try 5/4, 7/8, or 12/8 to add rhythmic variety.
