Changing BPM
Tempo defines the speed and feel of your session, measured in beats per minute (BPM). In Pro Tools, you can set an initial tempo, tap in a tempo by ear, or create tempo changes throughout your song. Whether you’re working with MIDI instruments, audio tracks, or a mix of both, controlling tempo helps keep your project aligned with the musical performance.
How to Change Your Session Tempo
Step 1. Locate the Tempo Field
- In the Edit Window, find the MIDI Controls section of the expanded Transport window.
Step 2. Set the BPM
- Click on the Tempo field (it usually defaults to 120.00).
- Type in the desired BPM and press Enter.
Tap Tempo (Optional)
If you want to match the tempo by feel rather than typing it in:
- Select the Tempo field.
- Tap the “T” key on your keyboard to set the tempo you want.
- Pro Tools calculates the average tempo based on your taps. (image)
How to Insert a Tempo Change Mid-Song
You can add tempo changes at any point in your timeline to create transitions, tempo shifts, or gradual feel changes.
Step 1. Open the Tempo Ruler
- In the Edit Window, enable the Tempo ruler (above your tracks).
Step 2. Insert a New Tempo
- Place your cursor where you want the tempo change.
- Click the “+” button in the Tempo ruler.
- The New Tempo dialog box appears. Enter the desired BPM and click OK.
Step 3. Playback with Tempo Change
- The timeline reflects the tempo change at that point, and Pro Tools adjusts playback accordingly.
Tips for Working with Tempo in Pro Tools
- Use Tap Tempo to match live recordings: This helps align your session with a performance captured without a click.
- Combine multiple tempo changes: Build dynamic arrangements by varying tempo across verses, choruses, or bridges.
- Check MIDI performance: MIDI tracks automatically follow tempo changes, making it easy to experiment without re-recording.
